Quel fougue, quel talent le "grand blond".... Ari débuta à l’Age de 18 ans sur l'ASCONA et se fit remarquer en "chatouillant" son maitre Hannu MIKKOLA. Il remporte le championnat Britannique OPEN en 1976. Pourtant, il avait la réputation de sortir souvent...Ca passe ou ça casse. Sur 29 abandons, il serait sorti 14 fois. "We don't hit things, we demolish things" dicton de son célèbre copilote David RICHARDS (figure emblématique de SUBARU, du WRC et de la F1). A noter qu'à cause de sa grande taille, SUTTON alors préparateur des ESCORT devait concocter un tableau de bord spécial uniquement fait pour lui. Au volant de l'ESCORT, Il remport2 le titre suprême en 1981 après une lutte de tous les instants avec Guy FREQUELIN, son futur patron. Il doit sa notoriété Française (il demeure actuellement dans le sud de la France) à ses exploits sans pareil (MONTECARLO 85) et ses victoires prestigieuses au DAKAR au volant de PEUGEOT. Un grave accident l'éloigna quelques temps du sport auto, mais la confiance que lui vouait Jean TODT le fait revenir au tout premier plan. Il continuait dans les années 90 pour s'éloigner de la course pour devenir enfin Député Européen.
Sa gentillesse en fit le pilote préféré des Français sans aucun doute.
Son exploit le plus frappant: Au MONTECARLO 85, du à une erreur de son copilote, il est pénalisé de 8 minutes et remonte pour gagner sur WALTER ROHRL avec quelques minutes d'avance. (j’y étais….ce fut grandiose)
Un autre non des moindres: En 2003, il remet le casque et au volant d'une 206 quelque peu vieillissante et privée, Il termine le1000 lacs à une excellente 11° place avec peu de reconnaissances et d'entrainement.
Il Possède la carte numéro 2 du Club de Jean (la numéro 1 étant celle de Jeannot lui-même), ami proche du Président du Club, celui-ci a une admiration sans faille pour le talent naturel du surdoué..

24° pilote de tous les temps, 10° pilote finlandais, Terrain de prédilection : La neige, voiture préférée : la 205 (devant l’ESCORT eh oui !) Rallye préféré : la FINLANDE. Fiabilité : 2 étoiles.

A un moment où j’étais très mal suite à un accident de rallye, j’ai eu la chance de rencontrer celui qui devint un ami personnel (il venait d’avoir son grave accident peu de temps auparavant). Nous nous sommes trouvé des atomes crochus et grâce à lui, j’ai redémarré en rallye (MANTA !)

Joyeux anniversaire ARI VATANEN!!!! nous pointons un peu en retard mais ce retard là, tu ne nous en tiendras pas rigueur.

What passion, what talent the "tall blond" .... Ari started at the age of 18 on the ASCONA and made a name for himself by "tickle" his master Hannu MIKKOLA. He won the British OPEN championship in 1976. However, he had the reputation of going off often ... It's make or break. Out of 29 retirements, he would have gone off 14 times. "We don't hit things, we demolish things" saying of his famous co-driver David RICHARDS (emblematic figure of SUBARU, WRC and F1). Note that because of his great size, SUTTON then preparer of the ESCORT had to concoct a special dashboard made just for him. At the wheel of the ESCORT, he won the supreme title in 1981 after a constant battle with Guy FREQUELIN, his future boss. He owes his French fame (he currently resides in the south of France) to his unparalleled exploits (MonteCarlo 85) and his prestigious victories in the Dakar Rally at the wheel of a Peugeot. A serious accident kept him away from motorsport for a while, but Jean Todt's faith in him brought him back to the forefront. He continued in the 1990s, eventually stepping away from racing and eventually becoming a Member of the European Parliament.

His kindness undoubtedly made him the French people's favorite driver.

His most striking achievement: In the MonteCarlo 85, due to a co-driver error, he was penalized 8 minutes and came back to win over Walter Rohrl by a few minutes. (I was there...it was magnificent)

Another not least: In 2003, he put his helmet back on and, at the wheel of a somewhat aging and private 206, he finished the 1000 Lakes in an excellent 11th place with little reconnaissance or training.

He holds the number 2 card of Jean's Club (the number 1 being that of Jeannot himself). A close friend of the Club President, the latter has unfailing admiration for the gifted driver's natural talent.

24th driver of all time, 10th Finnish driver, Favorite terrain: Snow, Favorite car: the 205 (ahead of the ESCORT, yes!) Favorite rally: FINLAND. Reliability: 2 stars.

At a time when I was very ill following a rally accident, I had the chance to meet someone who would become a personal friend (he had just had his serious accident shortly before). We hit it off, and thanks to him, I got back into rallying (MANTA!)
